A note on naming convention: The “worm” is a gear with very few teeth that have the appearance of a screw thread. It is the smaller component of the set and is referred to as the “worm”, “worm pinion” or “worm shaft”. The worm drives the larger gear of the set, commonly referred to as the “worm gear” or “worm wheel”. The term “worm gear” can be confusing because it is often used interchangeably to refer to either member of the set (either the pinion or the wheel).
